Wald test
Builds on Maximum likelihood estimationFisher informationStatistical hypothesis testChi-squared distribution
Definition
Let be data from a model with parameter in an open set , and let . Let be the maximum likelihood estimate of , and let be the Fisher information of evaluated at , assumed invertible. The Wald statistic for is The Wald test at level rejects when exceeds the quantile of the chi-squared distribution with degrees of freedom.
Remarks
Under and the usual regularity conditions for i.i.d. samples, converges in distribution to , so the test has asymptotic level . For the test rejects when , with and a standard normal quantile. The observed information may replace without changing the limit law. Example: for binomial with parameters and , one has and . Unlike the likelihood-ratio test, the Wald test is not invariant under a reparametrization of .
