Definition

Let {f(⋅;θ):θ∈Θ}\set{f(\cdot; \theta) : \theta \in \Theta} be a family of probability densities with respect to a measure ν\nu, with Θ\Theta an open subset of ℝk\R^k. Let xx be a point with f(x;θ)>0f(x; \theta) > 0 near a parameter θ\theta, and assume that θ↦log⁡f(x;θ)\theta \mapsto \log f(x; \theta) is differentiable at θ\theta. The score of θ\theta at xx is the gradient of the log-likelihood: s(θ;x)=∇θlog⁡f(x;θ)=(∂log⁡f(x;θ)∂θ1,…,∂log⁡f(x;θ)∂θk)T.s(\theta; x) = \nabla_\theta \log f(x; \theta) = \left(\frac{\partial \log f(x; \theta)}{\partial \theta_1}, \dots, \frac{\partial \log f(x; \theta)}{\partial \theta_k}\right)^T. For i.i.d. data x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n, the score of the sample is ∑i=1ns(θ;xi)\sum_{i=1}^n s(\theta; x_i).

Remarks

If differentiation under the integral sign is allowed in ∫f(x;θ) dν(x)=1\int f(x; \theta)\, d\nu(x) = 1, then Eθ[s(θ;X)]=0E_\theta[s(\theta; X)] = 0, where EθE_\theta is the expectation when XX has density f(⋅;θ)f(\cdot; \theta). Its covariance matrix Eθ[s(θ;X)s(θ;X)T]E_\theta[s(\theta; X) s(\theta; X)^T] is then the Fisher information.

Example: for f(x;μ)=(2π)−1/2e−(x−μ)2/2f(x; \mu) = (2\pi)^{-1/2} e^{-(x - \mu)^2/2}, log⁡f(x;μ)=−12log⁡(2π)−12(x−μ)2\log f(x; \mu) = -\frac{1}{2}\log(2\pi) - \frac{1}{2}(x - \mu)^2, so s(μ;x)=x−μs(\mu; x) = x - \mu, which has mean 00 and variance 11 when X∼𝒩(μ,1)X \sim \mathcal{N}(\mu, 1).

Non-example: for the uniform densities f(x;θ)=θ−1𝟏[0<x<θ]f(x; \theta) = \theta^{-1}\mathbf{1}[0 < x < \theta] with θ>0\theta > 0, the map θ↦log⁡f(x;θ)\theta \mapsto \log f(x; \theta) is not differentiable (it jumps from −∞-\infty) at θ=x\theta = x. Where it is defined, the score is −1/θ-1/\theta, whose mean is not 00: the support depends on θ\theta, and differentiation under the integral fails.
