Differentiable function of several variables

Builds on Euclidean spaceLimit of a function of several variables

Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be an open set, let f ⁣:U→ℝmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m, and let a∈Ua \in U. The function ff is differentiable at aa when there is a linear map L ⁣:ℝn→ℝmL \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m such that lim⁡h→0∥f(a+h)−f(a)−Lh∥∥h∥=0.\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{\|f(a + h) - f(a) - L h\|}{\|h\|} = 0. Here the limit is over h≠0h \ne 0 with a+h∈Ua + h \in U, and ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| is the Euclidean norm. The map LL is then unique. It is the derivative Df(a)Df(a), also called the total derivative of ff at aa.

Remarks

This is the Fréchet derivative for the spaces ℝn\mathbb{R}^n and ℝm\mathbb{R}^m, where each linear map is continuous. A function that is differentiable at aa is continuous at aa, and all its directional derivatives exist at aa. The converse fails: a function can have all partial derivatives at a point and not be differentiable there, see this counterexample. For n=m=1n = m = 1, the definition is the usual one, with Lh=f′(a)hL h = f'(a) h.
