Mean value inequality
Builds on Differentiable function of several variablesEuclidean space
Statement
Let be open, let be differentiable on , and let be points such that the segment lies in . Suppose that and for each , where is the operator norm. Then
Remarks
For , the inequality follows from the mean value theorem in several variables. For there is in general no equality form, but the inequality still holds. A standard proof applies the one-variable mean value theorem to . On a convex set with on , the inequality holds for all , so is Lipschitz on C.
