Real functions Theorem

Zero derivative on a connected open set implies constant

Builds on Mean value inequalityDifferentiable function of several variables

Statement

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be a connected open set and let f ⁣:U→ℝmf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^m be differentiable on UU. Suppose that Df(x)=0Df(x) = 0 for each x∈Ux \in U. Then ff is constant on UU.

Remarks

The proof fixes a∈Ua \in U and shows that the set S={x∈U:f(x)=f(a)}S = \{x \in U : f(x) = f(a)\} is open and closed in UU. It is open by the mean value inequality with M=0M = 0 on small balls, and closed because ff is continuous. As UU is connected and a∈Sa \in S, S=US = U. Connectedness is needed: on U=(0,1)∪(2,3)U = (0, 1) \cup (2, 3), the function that is 00 on the first interval and 11 on the second has derivative 00 but is not constant. For real-valued ff, the condition Df=0Df = 0 means that all partial derivatives of ff vanish on UU.
