Real functions Functions of several real variables Theorem
Implicit function theorem
Builds on C^k function characterised by continuous derivativesJacobian matrixInverse function theorem
Statement
Let be open, and let be of class C^1, written with and . Let with . Suppose that the matrix is invertible. Then there are open sets and with and , and a unique function with the following property. For , if and only if . The function is of class , and for each .
Remarks
Here is the matrix of partial derivatives with respect to . Together, and form the Jacobian matrix of . For and with , the solution near is . At , , and no such function exists. One proof applies the inverse function theorem to . If is of class , then is of class . The theorem has a long history. Cauchy gave the first rigorous form, and Dini extended the real version to any number of variables.
