Partial derivative
Builds on Euclidean spaceFunction of several variablesLimit of a function of several variables
Definition
Let be an open set, let , let , and let . Let be the -th standard basis vector of Euclidean space . The partial derivative of with respect to at is the limit when this limit exists in . Other notations for it are , and .
Remarks
The partial derivative is the ordinary derivative at of the function of one variable. So you compute it with the rules of one-variable calculus, and you treat the other variables as constants. It is the directional derivative in the direction . The existence of all partial derivatives at does not imply that is continuous at , see this counterexample.
