Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set, and let (uk)k≥1(u_k)_{k \ge 1} be a sequence of subharmonic functions on Ω\Omega. Assume that the sequence is locally uniformly bounded above: each compact set L⊆ΩL \subseteq \Omega has a constant CLC_L with uk≤CLu_k \le C_L on LL for all kk. Let ff be a continuous real function on Ω\Omega with lim sup⁡k→∞uk(x)≤f(x)\limsup_{k \to \infty} u_k(x) \le f(x) for every x∈Ωx \in \Omega. Then for every compact set K⊆ΩK \subseteq \Omega and every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is k0k_0 such that uk(x)≤f(x)+εfor all x∈K and all k≥k0.u_k(x) \le f(x) + \varepsilon \qquad \text{for all } x \in K \text{ and all } k \ge k_0.

Remarks

Proof idea: fix x0∈Kx_0 \in K and a small radius rr such that f<f(x0)+ε/3f < f(x_0) + \varepsilon/3 on a closed ball about x0x_0 inside Ω\Omega. By the sub-mean value property, uk(y)u_k(y) is at most the mean of uku_k over the ball B(y,r)B(y, r), for yy near x0x_0. The uniform upper bound allows the reverse form of Fatou's lemma, which bounds the limit superior of these ball means by the mean of lim sup⁡kuk≤f\limsup_k u_k \le f. This gives uk≤f(x0)+εu_k \le f(x_0) + \varepsilon on a neighbourhood of x0x_0 for large kk, and compactness of KK finishes the proof.

The lemma upgrades a pointwise upper bound to a uniform one on compact sets, in the upward direction only. A typical use: if uk≤0u_k \le 0 in the limit at every point, then max⁡Kuk\max_K u_k is eventually at most ε\varepsilon on each compact KK. The lower bound is not upgraded in the same way, because subharmonic functions can take very negative values on small sets.

Going deeper

For a student

The lemma is named after Hartogs, who used an argument of this kind in his theorem on separately holomorphic functions in several complex variables. It is a basic compactness tool for subharmonic and plurisubharmonic functions. Typical uses are bounds on 1klog⁡∣pk∣\frac{1}{k}\log\abs{p_k} for sequences of polynomials pkp_k, and the study of upper envelopes of families of subharmonic functions.
