C^k function characterised by continuous derivatives
Statement
Let be open, let , and let be an integer. Say that is of class on when the following is true for each component and each . Each partial derivative of order exists on and is continuous on . Then is of class on if and only if these two conditions hold.
- For each with , the iterated derivative exists on and is continuous on .
- For each with , the map is differentiable on .
Remarks
So in finite dimensions, means times continuously differentiable, in either the sense of partial derivatives or the sense of Fréchet derivatives. A function is of class , or smooth, when it is of class for each . Each polynomial in is of class on . The function is of class on , but it is not differentiable at .
