Local homeomorphism from the inverse function theorem
Statement
Let be open, and let be of class with invertible for each . Then each has an open neighbourhood such that is open and restricted to is a homeomorphism onto . In particular, is an open map: is open for each open set .
Remarks
This follows from the inverse function theorem, since a inverse is continuous. For each , the hypothesis is needed only at : if is invertible, is a homeomorphism from a neighbourhood of onto an open set. A local homeomorphism need not be injective. The map is a local homeomorphism from onto , but it is not injective.
