Fréchet derivative
Builds on Euclidean space
Definition
Let and be normed vector spaces over , let be an open set, let , and let . A bounded linear map is a Fréchet derivative of at when The limit is over with . When such an exists, is Fréchet differentiable at , with the notation or .
Remarks
The Fréchet derivative is unique when it exists, see the uniqueness of the derivative. For , a linear map is multiplication by a number . Then the condition says that has the derivative at in the usual sense. For and , each linear map is bounded, and is the total derivative of at . Its matrix is the Jacobian matrix. If is Fréchet differentiable at , then is continuous at .
