Anosov diffeomorphism

Builds on Hyperbolic setDiffeomorphismCompact space

Definition

Let MM be a compact Riemannian manifold and let f ⁣:M→Mf \colon M \to M be a C1C^1 diffeomorphism. Then ff is an Anosov diffeomorphism if MM itself is a hyperbolic set of ff. That is, there is a DfDf-invariant splitting TxM=Exs⊕ExuT_x M = E^s_x \oplus E^u_x for all x∈Mx \in M, and there are constants C>0C > 0 and 0<λ<10 < \lambda < 1. For all n≥0n \ge 0, they satisfy ∥Dfnv∥≤Cλn∥v∥\norm{Df^n v} \le C\lambda^n \norm{v} for v∈Esv \in E^s and ∥Df−nv∥≤Cλn∥v∥\norm{Df^{-n} v} \le C\lambda^n\norm{v} for v∈Euv \in E^u.

Remarks

The property does not depend on the choice of Riemannian metric, since MM is compact. Example: let AA be a 2×22 \times 2 integer matrix with det⁡A=±1\det A = \pm 1 and no eigenvalue of modulus 11, and let fAf_A be the induced map of the torus ℝ2/ℤ2\R^2/\Z^2. Then DfA=ADf_A = A at every point, and the eigenlines of AA give EsE^s and EuE^u with C=1C = 1 after a linear change of metric. For A=(2111)A = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} the eigenvalues are (3±5)/2(3 \pm \sqrt5)/2, which gives Arnold's cat map. Non-example: for A=(1101)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} the map fAf_A is a diffeomorphism of the torus, but both eigenvalues equal 11, so no direction is contracted and the condition fails. All known Anosov diffeomorphisms are, up to topological conjugacy, hyperbolic automorphisms of tori, nilmanifolds or infranilmanifolds; whether this is always the case is an open question.
