Diffeomorphism

Definition
Let be open, and let be an integer or . A map is a diffeomorphism if is a bijection of class C^k on . In addition, must be of class on . The sets and are diffeomorphic if there is a diffeomorphism from to .
Remarks
If is a diffeomorphism, the chain rule applied to shows that is invertible for each . Conversely, a bijection with invertible at each point is a diffeomorphism, by the inverse function theorem. The map is a bijection of , but it is not a diffeomorphism, because its inverse is not differentiable at . Polar coordinates give a diffeomorphism from onto the plane without the closed half-line .
