Jacobian determinant

Builds on Jacobian matrix

Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, let f ⁣:U→ℝnf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}^n, and let a∈Ua \in U be a point at which all first partial derivatives of ff exist. The Jacobian determinant of ff at aa is the determinant det⁡Jf(a)=det⁡(∂fi∂xj(a))1≤i,j≤n\det J_f(a) = \det \left( \frac{\partial f_i}{\partial x_j}(a) \right)_{1 \le i, j \le n} of the Jacobian matrix of ff at aa. It is also written ∂(f1,…,fn)∂(x1,…,xn)(a)\dfrac{\partial (f_1, \dots, f_n)}{\partial (x_1, \dots, x_n)}(a), and it is often called the Jacobian of ff.

Remarks

For the polar map (r,θ)↦(rcos⁡θ,rsin⁡θ)(r, \theta) \mapsto (r \cos \theta, r \sin \theta), the Jacobian determinant is rcos⁡2θ+rsin⁡2θ=rr \cos^2 \theta + r \sin^2 \theta = r. If ff is of class C1C^1 and det⁡Jf(a)≠0\det J_f(a) \ne 0, then ff has a differentiable local inverse near aa, by the inverse function theorem. The absolute value ∣det⁡Jf∣|\det J_f| is the factor in the change of variables formula for multiple integrals.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
