Adjoint state method
Builds on GradientJacobian matrixImplicit function theoremChain rule
Definition
Let and be continuously differentiable, written and . Let and let be a continuously differentiable map defined near with . Assume that the Jacobian matrix is invertible at . Let be the reduced objective. The adjoint state at is the vector that solves the adjoint equation The adjoint state method computes the gradient of by the formula
Remarks
The formula follows from the chain rule. Differentiating gives , so . By the implicit function theorem, invertibility of at a solution gives the smooth map locally. The forward method needs linear solves with , one for each column of ; the adjoint method needs one solve with . For a time-dependent state equation the adjoint equation runs backward in time; in optimal control it is the costate equation.
Example: with an invertible matrix and , and for a fixed . Then , and , so and . Directly, has gradient , as it should.
Non-example: let and , at the point , where is singular. The adjoint equation need not have a solution, and the state is not a differentiable function of there.
