Builds on Euclidean space

Summary

Let ff map an open subset of ℝn\mathbb{R}^n to ℝm\mathbb{R}^m. The total derivative of ff at a point aa is the linear map Df(a) ⁣:ℝn→ℝmDf(a) \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m that best approximates ff near aa. That is, f(a+h)=f(a)+Df(a)(h)+o(∥h∥)f(a + h) = f(a) + Df(a)(h) + o(\|h\|) as h→0h \to 0. It is the Fréchet derivative in the case of Euclidean spaces. Its matrix in the standard bases is the Jacobian matrix of ff at aa.

Remarks

The total derivative accounts for changes in all variables at once. A partial derivative accounts for a change in one variable only. When ff depends on tt both directly and through other functions of tt, the total derivative ddtf(t,x(t))\dfrac{d}{dt} f(t, x(t)) is the sum ∂f∂t+∂f∂xdxdt\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial t} + \dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x} \dfrac{dx}{dt}, by the chain rule.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
