Harmonic functions on Riemannian manifolds

Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold and let be an open set. In local coordinates , write for the metric, for its inverse matrix and . The Laplace–Beltrami operator of a function is with summation over repeated indices; it equals and does not depend on the coordinates. A function is harmonic on if on .
Remarks
For with the Euclidean metric, is the usual Laplacian, and the definition gives the classical harmonic functions. Example: on the upper half-plane with the hyperbolic metric , one has . So the function is harmonic, and so is the bounded function . Non-example: on the unit sphere with the round metric, the height function satisfies , so it is not harmonic. On a connected closed manifold every harmonic function is constant, since . The definition depends on the metric: a function harmonic for one metric need not be harmonic for another. In dimension , however, harmonicity is unchanged under conformal changes of metric.
