Definition
Let be a smooth manifold and let be an integer. Let be the set of -jets of local diffeomorphisms of at points of their domains. It is a Lie groupoid over , with composition of jets as multiplication. Let be a pseudogroup of local diffeomorphisms of . It is a Lie pseudogroup of order if there is a subgroupoid with these properties.
- is a closed embedded submanifold of .
- A local diffeomorphism of lies in if and only if for every .
Remarks
The condition for all is a system of partial differential equations of order for , and is its set of local invertible solutions. Definitions in the literature differ in details, for example in requiring the equations to be analytic or involutive.
Example: let be a Riemannian metric on , and let be the set of -jets whose derivative is a linear isometry from to . It is a closed subgroupoid and a submanifold, and a local diffeomorphism has all its -jets in exactly when it is a local isometry. So local isometries form a Lie pseudogroup of order . In the same way, area-preserving maps of are the local diffeomorphisms whose -jets satisfy .
Non-example: the pseudogroup of all local homeomorphisms of is not a Lie pseudogroup. It contains maps that are not smooth, so it is not even a pseudogroup of local diffeomorphisms.
