Differential dynamic programming
Builds on Hessian matrixGradientNewton's method
Definition
Let , and be twice continuously differentiable, and let . Consider the problem of minimising over , where and is given. Subscripts denote partial derivatives, a Hessian and a gradient. One iteration of differential dynamic programming starts from controls with states and does the following.
- Backward pass: set and . For , take all derivatives at and from step . Compute where is the matrix and similarly for the others. If is positive definite, set , , and update and .
- Forward pass: set and, for , set and .
The new controls replace , and the iteration is repeated until the corrections are small.
Remarks
The function is the second-order expansion of , where is the quadratic model of the cost-to-go. The correction minimises this quadratic model in , and the update of gives the model of the minimum. Dropping the terms with second derivatives of gives the iterative linear-quadratic regulator. In practice one scales by a step size and adds a multiple of the identity to for robustness.
Example: if and , are quadratic forms with positive definite, the expansions are exact. Then the backward pass is the discrete Riccati recursion of the linear-quadratic regulator, and one iteration gives the optimal controls from any starting guess.
Non-example: take , and , so that is not positive definite. The quadratic model has no minimiser in , and the step of clause 1 is not defined.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
