Limit of a function

Builds on Limit point of a set

Definition

Let DD be a subset of ℝ\mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function, and let aa be a limit point of DD. A real number LL is the limit of ff at aa if the following holds. For each open interval VV containing LL there is an open interval UU containing aa with f(x)∈Vf(x) \in V for all x∈U∩Dx \in U \cap D with x≠ax \ne a. The notation is lim⁡x→af(x)=L\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L, or f(x)→Lf(x) \to L as x→ax \to a.

Remarks

The value of ff at aa plays no role, and aa need not lie in DD. The epsilon-delta definition states the same condition with numbers. The sequential characterization states it with sequences. The limit is unique when it exists, since aa is a limit point of DD. Mathlib expresses limits with filters, as Filter.Tendsto.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
