Uniform convergence of derivatives allows term-by-term differentiation
Builds on Uniform convergenceMean value theoremUniformly Cauchy sequence of functions
Statement
Let , and let be differentiable for each . Assume that converges for some , and that converges uniformly on to a function . Then converges uniformly on to a differentiable function , and .
Remarks
The mean value theorem applied to shows that is uniformly Cauchy.
Uniform convergence of alone is not enough. The functions tend to uniformly, but their derivatives do not converge.
