Basel problem via Fourier series
Builds on Basel problemFourier seriesL2 convergence of Fourier series
Example
Let be the -periodic function with for . Its Fourier series is : indeed is odd, so the cosine coefficients vanish, and integration by parts gives In complex form, and for . Parseval's identity, from the L2 convergence of Fourier series, gives So , which is the Basel problem.
Remarks
A second route uses the pointwise convergence of a Fourier series instead of Parseval. The -periodic function equal to on is continuous and piecewise smooth, and its Fourier series converges to it everywhere. At this gives , the same value. Parseval applied to gives in the same way.
