Open set
Builds on Topological spaceMetric topology
Definition
Let be a topological space. A subset of is open in when . A subset of a metric space is open when it is open for the metric topology.
Remarks
In a metric space , a set is open if and only if for each there is with . This is the statement open sets of a metric space. In , each open interval is open, but is not open: no ball about lies in . The empty set and are always open.
