Compact set
Builds on Compact spaceSubspace topology
Definition
Let be a topological space and let . The set is compact when , with the subspace topology, is a compact space.
Remarks
By compactness via open covers, is compact exactly when each cover of by open sets of has a finite subcover. Each finite subset of is compact. The empty set is compact. In , the interval is compact, but and are not. The Heine–Borel theorem describes the compact subsets of .
