Compactness of integral operators
Builds on Continuous kernelHilbert–Schmidt integral operatorCompact operatorArzelà–Ascoli theoremFinite-rank operatorApproximation of a kernel by degenerate kernels
Statement
Let .
- Let be a continuous kernel. Then the operator maps to itself and is a compact operator on with the sup norm.
- Let be a -finite measure space and let . Then the Hilbert–Schmidt integral operator is a compact operator on , and .
Remarks
For part 1, let run over the unit ball of . Then , and , which is small when and are close, by uniform continuity of . So the image of the unit ball is bounded and equicontinuous, and the Arzelà–Ascoli theorem shows that it is relatively compact.
For part 2, the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality gives , and integrating in gives the norm bound. Approximating by degenerate kernels in then writes as a norm limit of finite-rank operators, and such a limit is compact.
Example: the Volterra operator on has the square-integrable kernel equal to for and otherwise, so it is compact.
The integrability of the kernel matters. On , the convolution has a kernel that is not in . This is not compact: it commutes with translations, so the images of the translates of a fixed nonzero function have no convergent subsequence.

For a student
Compactness is what makes integral equations of the second kind behave like finite linear systems. Once the operator is known to be compact, Fredholm's theorem and the spectral theory of compact operators apply, and for symmetric kernels so does the Hilbert–Schmidt theorem.
