Uniform continuity on a set

Builds on Uniform continuity

Definition

Let D⊆ℝD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function, and let S⊆DS \subseteq D. The function ff is uniformly continuous on SS if the following holds. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣f(x)−f(y)∣<ε|f(x) - f(y)| < \varepsilon for all x,y∈Sx, y \in S with ∣x−y∣<δ|x - y| < \delta.

Remarks

So ff is uniformly continuous on SS when its restriction to SS is uniformly continuous. A function can be uniformly continuous on a set but not on a larger set. For example, x2x^2 is uniformly continuous on [0,1][0, 1] but not on ℝ\mathbb{R}. Mathlib defines it as UniformContinuousOn.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 6 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
