General topology Compactness Lemma
Lebesgue number lemma
Builds on Compact spaceOpen coverDiameter of a set
Statement
Let be a compact metric space and let be an open cover of . Then there is a real such that each subset with diameter is contained in for some .
Remarks
Such a number is a Lebesgue number of the cover. Equivalently, for each , the ball lies in one of the sets . Compactness is needed: the cover of by the sets has no Lebesgue number.
