- ConceptTopological space
A topological space is a set together with a choice of subsets, called open sets, that obey simple rules for unions and intersections. This structure is enough to define continuity, convergence, compactness and connectedness without a notion of distance.
- ConceptOpen set
An open set is a member of a topology. In a metric space, a set is open when each of its points has a small ball around it that stays in the set.
- ConceptClosed set
A closed set in a topological space is a set whose complement is open. In a metric space, the closed sets are the sets that contain the limits of all their convergent sequences.
- ConceptClopen set
A clopen set in a topological space is a subset that is both open and closed. The empty set and the whole space are always clopen. A space is connected exactly when it has no other clopen sets, so clopen sets measure how a space splits into pieces.
- ConceptNeighbourhood
The neighbourhood of a vertex in a graph is the set of vertices adjacent to it. Many local properties of graphs, such as degrees, are defined through neighbourhoods. The node neighbourhood gives the precise definition.
- ConceptBasis of a topology
A basis of a topology is a family of open sets such that every open set is a union of members of the family. A basis lets you describe a topology by a small set of simple open sets, such as open intervals or open balls.
