Definition

Let GG be a topological group and let XX be a topological space. A topological transformation group is a triple (G,X,α)(G, X, \alpha) where α ⁣:G×X→X\alpha \colon G \times X \to X is a group action of GG on XX, written α(g,x)=g⋅x\alpha(g, x) = g \cdot x, such that α\alpha is continuous. Here G×XG \times X carries the product topology. One also says that GG acts continuously on XX.

Remarks

Example: the group SO(3)\mathrm{SO}(3) of rotations of ℝ3\R^3, with the topology from the matrix entries, acting on the unit sphere S2S^2 by (A,x)↦Ax(A, x) \mapsto Ax. The map is given by polynomials in the entries of AA and the coordinates of xx, so it is continuous. Non-example: (ℝ,+)(\R, +) with the usual topology acting on ℝ\R with the discrete topology by (t,x)↦t+x(t, x) \mapsto t + x. This is a group action, but it is not continuous: for fixed xx, the map t↦t+xt \mapsto t + x from ℝ\R to the discrete space is not continuous. For each g∈Gg \in G the map x↦g⋅xx \mapsto g \cdot x is a homeomorphism of XX, with inverse x↦g−1⋅xx \mapsto g^{-1} \cdot x.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
