- ConceptTopological group
A topological group is a group with a topology in which multiplication and inversion are continuous. It is the basic object where algebra and topology work together. It is the setting of abstract harmonic analysis and of the theory of Lie groups. Translations by group elements are homeomorphisms, so the topology near any point looks like the topology near the identity. The real line under addition, the circle group, matrix groups and the -adic integers are all topological groups.
- ConceptContinuous multiplication
A set with a binary operation and a topology has continuous multiplication when the operation, seen as a map of two variables, is continuous. Here the domain carries the product topology. This single condition is the common base of topological semigroups, topological monoids and topological groups. It asks for joint continuity, which is stronger than continuity in each variable separately.
- ConceptSemitopological group
A semitopological group is a group with a topology in which multiplication is continuous in each variable separately. Equivalently, every left translation and every right translation is continuous, and then each translation is a homeomorphism. It weakens the notion of a topological group, which asks for joint continuity of multiplication and continuity of inversion. Ellis's theorem says that a locally compact Hausdorff semitopological group is already a topological group.
- ConceptParatopological group
A paratopological group is a group with a topology in which multiplication is jointly continuous, while inversion need not be continuous. It sits between a semitopological group and a topological group. The standard example that is not a topological group is the real line under addition with the lower limit topology. Much of the theory asks which extra conditions force inversion to be continuous.
- ConceptTopological monoid
A topological monoid is a monoid with a topology in which the multiplication is jointly continuous. It is a topological semigroup that has an identity element. Topological monoids arise in algebraic topology, for example as Moore loop spaces, where loops of varying length are concatenated. They also arise in the study of operator semigroups.
- ConceptTopological semigroup
A topological semigroup is a semigroup with a topology in which the semigroup operation is jointly continuous. It is a very general setting where algebra and topology meet through one associative operation. Topological monoids and topological groups are special cases. Compact topological semigroups have a rich structure theory with uses in topological dynamics.
