Definition
Let be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center. Let be an Iwasawa decomposition, with the Lie algebra of . Let be the set of with for all . The group is the minimal parabolic subgroup. A parabolic subgroup of is a closed subgroup of such that for some .
Remarks
Example: , with , the positive diagonal matrices and the upper unipotent matrices. Then , and is the group of all upper triangular matrices in . So is parabolic, with .
Non-example: in is closed, but it is not parabolic. It is compact, so each subgroup of it is relatively compact, while each conjugate of contains a conjugate of and is not.
In , the minimal parabolic subgroup is the group of upper triangular matrices, and the parabolic subgroups are the conjugates of the block upper triangular subgroups. Equivalently, is parabolic when it is the normalizer in of a subalgebra of whose complexification contains a Borel subalgebra of .
For complex or algebraic groups, a parabolic subgroup is a closed subgroup containing a Borel subgroup. The phrase also has a different meaning for Coxeter groups: a subgroup generated by a subset of the simple reflections.
