Definition
A Lie groupoid is a groupoid with set of objects and set of arrows , with source and target maps , such that:
- and are smooth manifolds;
- and are smooth submersions;
- the composition , defined on pairs with , is smooth;
- the unit map , sending to the identity arrow at , and the inversion are smooth.
Since and are submersions, the set is an embedded submanifold of , so clause 3 makes sense.
Remarks
Example: a Lie group is a Lie groupoid with one object; the maps and to a point are submersions, and composition is the group product.
Example: for a smooth action of a Lie group on a manifold , the action groupoid has , , , , and .
Non-example: the compact group , viewed as a groupoid with one object, is not a Lie groupoid. Its space of arrows is not a manifold: it is totally disconnected but has no isolated points, so it is not locally Euclidean of any dimension.
Some authors allow to be a non-Hausdorff manifold, which is needed for groupoids arising from foliations.
