Definition

Let GG be a connected Lie group. A universal covering group of GG is a Lie group G~\tilde G together with a map p ⁣:G~→Gp \colon \tilde G \to G such that:

  1. G~\tilde G is connected and simply connected, that is, its fundamental group is trivial;
  2. pp is a homomorphism of Lie groups;
  3. pp is a covering map.

Remarks

Existence: let p ⁣:G~→Gp \colon \tilde G \to G be the universal cover of the manifold GG, and choose e~\tilde e over the identity ee. There is a unique Lie group structure on G~\tilde G with identity e~\tilde e for which pp is a homomorphism. The universal covering group is unique up to isomorphism over GG. The kernel of pp is a discrete central subgroup of G~\tilde G, isomorphic to π1(G)\pi_1(G).

Example: p ⁣:ℝ→S1p \colon \R \to S^1, p(t)=e2πitp(t) = e^{2\pi i t}, is a homomorphism from (ℝ,+)(\R, +), a covering map, and ℝ\R is simply connected; the kernel is ℤ=π1(S1)\Z = \pi_1(S^1).

Example: identify SU(2)SU(2) with the unit quaternions and ℝ3\R^3 with the purely imaginary quaternions. The map sending qq to the rotation v↦qvq−1v \mapsto q v q^{-1} is a universal covering group SU(2)→SO(3)SU(2) \to SO(3) with kernel {±1}\set{\pm 1}.

Non-example: the identity map SO(3)→SO(3)SO(3) \to SO(3) is a homomorphism and a covering map, but SO(3)SO(3) is not simply connected, since π1(SO(3))≅ℤ/2\pi_1(SO(3)) \cong \Z/2.
