Mahler's compactness theorem

Builds on Lattice (group)Compact setQuotient space

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1, and let ℒn\mathcal{L}_n be the set of lattices in ℝn\R^n. Identify ℒn\mathcal{L}_n with the quotient space GLn(ℝ)/GLn(ℤ)\mathrm{GL}_n(\R)/\mathrm{GL}_n(\Z), by sending gg to the lattice gℤng\Z^n, and give it the quotient topology. Let A⊆ℒnA \subseteq \mathcal{L}_n. Then AA has compact closure in ℒn\mathcal{L}_n if and only if there are constants C>0C > 0 and ε>0\varepsilon > 0 such that for every Λ∈A\Lambda \in A:

  1. the covolume of Λ\Lambda is at most CC;
  2. every nonzero vector v∈Λv \in \Lambda has ∥v∥≥ε\norm{v} \ge \varepsilon.

Remarks

The proof uses reduction theory. Under the two bounds, each lattice of AA has a reduced basis whose vectors have length bounded above and below, with angles bounded away from 00. Such bases form a compact set of matrices, whose image in ℒn\mathcal{L}_n contains AA. The converse holds because covolume and the length of a shortest nonzero vector are continuous on ℒn\mathcal{L}_n.

Example: the lattices Λt=ℤ(t,0)⊕ℤ(0,1/t)\Lambda_t = \Z (t, 0) \oplus \Z (0, 1/t) in ℝ2\R^2 have covolume 11. Their shortest nonzero vector has length tt for 0<t≤10 < t \le 1. As t→0t \to 0 condition 2 fails, and indeed Λt\Lambda_t leaves every compact subset of ℒ2\mathcal{L}_2.

Both conditions are needed. The lattices tℤ2t\Z^2 with t→∞t \to \infty satisfy condition 2 but not condition 1, and they also leave every compact set.

Going deeper

For a student

For unimodular lattices, condition 1 is automatic, so a set of unimodular lattices is relatively compact exactly when the lattices avoid a fixed ball around 00. This gives the basic criterion for divergence in the homogeneous space SLn(ℝ)/SLn(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_n(\R)/\mathrm{SL}_n(\Z). It is used in homogeneous dynamics, for example in the non-divergence results of Margulis and Dani for unipotent flows, and in Diophantine approximation through Dani's correspondence.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
