Nilpotent Lie group
Definition
Let be a connected real or complex Lie group. Its lower central series is and for , where is the subgroup generated by the commutators with and . The group is a nilpotent Lie group if for some , that is, if is a nilpotent group.
Remarks
A connected Lie group is nilpotent if and only if its Lie algebra is a nilpotent Lie algebra, that is, the series reaches .
Example: the group of real upper triangular matrices with on the diagonal. Writing for the matrix with entries , above the diagonal and in the corner, a direct computation shows that the commutator of and is . So , which is the centre of , and ; is nilpotent.
Non-example: the group of affine maps of with , written . The commutator of and is , so is the group of all translations , and then again contains every translation. So is the translation group for all and never trivial: is solvable but not nilpotent.
