Definition
Let be a locally compact group and let be a discrete subgroup of . Let be the space of left cosets with the quotient topology, on which acts by . The subgroup is a lattice in if there is a nonzero Radon measure on such that:
- is -invariant: for every and every Borel set ;
- is finite: .
A lattice is uniform, or cocompact, if is compact.
Remarks
Example: in . The quotient is the torus, and the image of Lebesgue measure on is a translation-invariant measure on it of total mass . Since the torus is compact, is a uniform lattice.
Non-example: in is discrete, but fails clause 2. The quotient is the cylinder . Every invariant Radon measure on it is a multiple of the product of the Haar measures of the two factors. The nonzero ones have infinite total mass.
If has a lattice, then is unimodular. A measurable fundamental domain for the action of on by right multiplication has finite Haar measure exactly when is a lattice. The group is a lattice in that is not uniform.
