Semisimple Lie group
Builds on Lie group
Definition
Let be a connected real or complex Lie group, and let be its Lie algebra. The group is a semisimple Lie group if is a semisimple Lie algebra, that is, the only solvable ideal of is .
Remarks
Let be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic . The following are equivalent:
- the only solvable ideal of is ;
- is a direct sum of simple ideals;
- the Killing form is nondegenerate (Cartan's criterion).
Example: . Its Lie algebra is isomorphic to , a direct sum of two simple ideals, so is semisimple. It is not simple, since each summand is a proper nonzero ideal.
Non-example: , the invertible real matrices with positive determinant, for . Its Lie algebra contains the ideal of scalar matrices, which is abelian, hence solvable, and nonzero. So the condition fails.
Some authors do not require to be connected and ask only that be semisimple; some also ask for a finite centre.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
