Definition

Let GG be a Lie group with identity ee. For g∈Gg \in G, the left translation by gg is the diffeomorphism Lg ⁣:G→GL_g \colon G \to G, Lg(h)=ghL_g(h) = gh. A vector field XX on GG is left-invariant if (dLg)h(Xh)=Xghfor all g,h∈G,(dL_g)_h (X_h) = X_{gh} \quad \text{for all } g, h \in G, where (dLg)h(dL_g)_h is the differential of LgL_g at hh.

Remarks

Example: on G=GLn(ℝ)G = GL_n(\R), open in the space Mn(ℝ)M_n(\R) of matrices, fix A∈Mn(ℝ)A \in M_n(\R) and put Xg=gAX_g = gA. Left translation by gg is the linear map h↦ghh \mapsto gh, so its differential is again v↦gvv \mapsto gv, and (dLg)h(Xh)=ghA=Xgh(dL_g)_h(X_h) = g h A = X_{gh}.

Non-example: on the same group, the field Yg=AgY_g = Ag with A≠0A \ne 0 is not left-invariant in general. For n=2n = 2, A=(0100)A = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} and g=(1002)g = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 2 \end{pmatrix}, one gets (dLg)e(Ye)=gA≠Ag=Yg(dL_g)_e(Y_e) = gA \ne Ag = Y_g. It is right-invariant instead.

The map X↦XeX \mapsto X_e is a linear isomorphism from the space of left-invariant vector fields onto the tangent space TeGT_eG; the inverse sends vv to the field g↦(dLg)e(v)g \mapsto (dL_g)_e(v). The Lie bracket of two left-invariant vector fields is left-invariant. So TeGT_eG inherits a bracket, and with it becomes the Lie algebra of GG, written 𝔤\mathfrak{g} or Lie⁡(G)\operatorname{Lie}(G). Every left-invariant vector field is complete: its integral curves are defined on all of ℝ\R.
