Statement

Let GG be a connected and simply connected real Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}. Let 𝔯\mathfrak{r} be the radical of 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, its largest solvable ideal, and let RR be the connected Lie subgroup of GG with Lie algebra 𝔯\mathfrak{r}. Then the following hold.

  1. The subgroup RR is closed, normal, simply connected and solvable.
  2. There is a closed, simply connected, semisimple Lie subgroup SS of GG such that G=R⋊SG = R \rtimes S, that is, G=RSG = RS and R∩S={e}R \cap S = \set{e}.
  3. If S′S' is a second subgroup as in 2, then S′=xSx−1S' = x S x^{-1} for some x∈Rx \in R.

A subgroup SS as in 2 is a Levi subgroup of GG.

Remarks

The proof starts from the Levi decomposition of the Lie algebra, 𝔤=𝔯⋊𝔰\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{r} \rtimes \mathfrak{s} with 𝔰\mathfrak{s} a semisimple subalgebra. The quotient G/RG/R is simply connected with Lie algebra 𝔰\mathfrak{s}, so the connected subgroup SS with Lie algebra 𝔰\mathfrak{s} maps isomorphically onto G/RG/R. Thus SS is the image of a continuous section of G→G/RG \to G/R, which gives 2. Part 3 comes from Malcev's theorem that two Levi subalgebras are conjugate by exp⁡(ad⁡z)\exp(\operatorname{ad} z) for some zz in 𝔯\mathfrak{r}; then x=exp⁡zx = \exp z works.

Example: the group GG of affine maps v↦Av+bv \mapsto Av + b of ℝ2\R^2 with A∈SL2(ℝ)A \in \mathrm{SL}_2(\R) has radical the translations R≅ℝ2R \cong \R^2 and Levi subgroup SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R). This GG is not simply connected; its universal cover is ℝ2⋊SL~2(ℝ)\R^2 \rtimes \widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\R).

Simple connectedness is needed for 2. For a general connected Lie group, a Levi subgroup SS still exists and G=RSG = RS, but R∩SR \cap S need not be trivial, and SS need not be closed.

For a student

The decomposition reduces many questions about Lie groups to two separate theories. Solvable groups are studied by induction on dimension, using Lie's theorem and the structure of nilpotent groups. Semisimple groups are studied with root systems, the Cartan and Iwasawa decompositions, and Weyl groups. The Lie algebra version is due to Levi, and the conjugacy statement to Malcev.
