Statement

Let GG be a topological group with identity ee. Let A⊆GA \subseteq G be a set that has the Baire property and is not meagre. Then the set A−1A={a−1b:a,b∈A}A^{-1} A = \set{a^{-1} b : a, b \in A} is a neighbourhood of ee.

Remarks

Since AA has the Baire property and is not meagre, there is a nonempty open set UU such that AA differs from UU by a meagre set. Since GG is not meagre, the Banach category theorem and homogeneity show that no nonempty open subset of GG is meagre. For gg near ee, the open set U∩gUU \cap gU is nonempty, so it is not meagre. The set A∩gAA \cap gA differs from it by a meagre set, so A∩gAA \cap gA is not empty and g∈AA−1g \in A A^{-1}. Applying this to A−1A^{-1}, which also has the Baire property and is not meagre, gives the statement for A−1AA^{-1}A. It is the category analogue of the Steinhaus theorem on sets of positive measure. A standard application: a homomorphism between Polish groups that is Baire measurable is continuous. The hypothesis that AA is not meagre is needed. In ℝ\R the set ℤ\Z is closed, so it has the Baire property, but it is meagre, and ℤ−ℤ=ℤ\Z - \Z = \Z is not a neighbourhood of 00.

For a student

The lemma is the main tool of automatic continuity results in descriptive set theory. To show a homomorphism ff is continuous at ee, take a neighbourhood VV of the identity in the target and a smaller symmetric WW with W−1W⊆VW^{-1} W \subseteq V. If f−1(W)f^{-1}(W) has the Baire property and is not meagre, the lemma shows that f−1(V)f^{-1}(V) contains a neighbourhood of ee.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
