Maximal torus

Builds on Compact Lie groupTorus as a group

Definition

Let GG be a compact Lie group. A torus in GG is a compact connected abelian Lie subgroup of GG. Each such subgroup is isomorphic to the torus group 𝕋k\mathbb{T}^k for some k≥0k \ge 0. A maximal torus of GG is a torus T⊆GT \subseteq G such that every torus T′T' with T⊆T′⊆GT \subseteq T' \subseteq G satisfies T′=TT' = T.

Remarks

Example: in G=U(n)G = U(n), the subgroup TT of diagonal matrices diag⁡(z1,…,zn)\operatorname{diag}(z_1, \dots, z_n) with ∣zj∣=1\abs{z_j} = 1 is a maximal torus. It is a torus, isomorphic to 𝕋n\mathbb{T}^n. Let T′⊇TT' \supseteq T be a torus. Each element of T′T' commutes with a diagonal matrix with distinct entries, so it is diagonal; thus T′=TT' = T. Non-example: in U(2)U(2), the subgroup {diag⁡(z,1):∣z∣=1}\set{\operatorname{diag}(z, 1) : \abs{z} = 1} is a torus, but it is not maximal, since it lies in the diagonal torus 𝕋2\mathbb{T}^2. The dimension of a maximal torus is the rank of GG; for U(n)U(n) it is nn, and for SU(n)SU(n) it is n−1n - 1. Every torus of GG lies in some maximal torus, by a dimension argument.
