Universal property of the quotient topology
Builds on Quotient topologyContinuous map of topological spacesFunction composition
Statement
Let be a topological space, let be an equivalence relation on , and give the quotient topology, with quotient map . Let be a topological space and let be a function. Then is continuous if and only if the composition is continuous.
Remarks
Proof of the converse: for open in , the set is open in . Thus is open in the quotient. So each continuous map that is constant on each class gives a unique continuous map with . For example, is constant on the classes of , so it gives a continuous map from to the circle.
