Definition

Let (M,ω)(M, \omega) be a symplectic manifold of dimension 2n2n, let H ⁣:M→ℝH \colon M \to \R be smooth, and let U⊆MU \subseteq M be open. Let 𝕋n=ℝn/2πℤn\mathbb{T}^n = \R^n / 2\pi \Z^n be the nn-torus. Action-angle coordinates for HH on UU are given by a diffeomorphism Ψ ⁣:U→D×𝕋n\Psi \colon U \to D \times \mathbb{T}^n, with D⊆ℝnD \subseteq \R^n open, written Ψ=(I1,…,In,θ1,…,θn)\Psi = (I_1, \ldots, I_n, \theta_1, \ldots, \theta_n), such that:

  1. ω=∑k=1ndIk∧dθk\omega = \sum_{k=1}^n dI_k \wedge d\theta_k on UU;
  2. H=K(I1,…,In)H = K(I_1, \ldots, I_n) on UU for a smooth function K ⁣:D→ℝK \colon D \to \R.

The IkI_k are the actions and the θk\theta_k are the angles.

Remarks

Here the convention is ω=∑kdpk∧dqk\omega = \sum_k dp_k \wedge dq_k on ℝ2n\R^{2n}, so that the actions play the role of momenta and the angles the role of positions. In these coordinates the Hamiltonian system reads Ik′=0I_k' = 0 and θk′=∂K/∂Ik(I)\theta_k' = \partial K / \partial I_k (I), so θ(t)=θ(0)+t ∇K(I)\theta(t) = \theta(0) + t \, \nabla K(I).

Example: the harmonic oscillator H=12(p2+q2)H = \frac{1}{2}(p^2 + q^2) on ℝ2∖{0}\R^2 \setminus \set{0}. Put q=2Isin⁡θq = \sqrt{2I} \sin \theta and p=2Icos⁡θp = \sqrt{2I} \cos \theta with I>0I > 0. A short computation gives dp∧dq=dI∧dθdp \wedge dq = dI \wedge d\theta, and H=IH = I, so both clauses hold with K(I)=IK(I) = I.

Non-example: polar coordinates q=rsin⁡θq = r \sin \theta, p=rcos⁡θp = r \cos \theta with r>0r > 0 give H=r2/2H = r^2/2, but dp∧dq=r dr∧dθdp \wedge dq = r \, dr \wedge d\theta, so clause 1 fails.

For an integrable system, the actions can be computed as Ik=12π∮γkp dqI_k = \frac{1}{2\pi} \oint_{\gamma_k} p \, dq over basic cycles γk\gamma_k of an invariant torus, when ω=d(∑kpk dqk)\omega = d(\sum_k p_k \, dq_k).
