General topology Compactness Proposition
Compact subsets of a Hausdorff space are closed
Builds on Compactness via open coversHausdorff spaceClosed set
Statement
Let be a Hausdorff space and let be a compact subset of . Then is closed in .
Remarks
Proof: fix . For each , choose disjoint open sets and . Finitely many cover . Then is an open set that contains and misses . The Hausdorff condition is needed. With the indiscrete topology on a set with two points, each one-point set is compact but not closed. Each metric space is Hausdorff, so compact subsets of metric spaces are closed.
