Example

Let Γ⊂ℝn\Gamma \subset \R^n be a lattice, and let TΓ=ℝn/ΓT_\Gamma = \R^n / \Gamma be the flat torus with the metric induced from ℝn\R^n. Let Γ∗={v∈ℝn:⟨v,γ⟩∈ℤ for all γ∈Γ}\Gamma^* = \set{v \in \R^n : \ip{v}{\gamma} \in \Z \text{ for all } \gamma \in \Gamma} be the dual lattice. For each γ∗∈Γ∗\gamma^* \in \Gamma^*, the function x↦e2πi⟨γ∗,x⟩x \mapsto e^{2\pi i \ip{\gamma^*}{x}} is an eigenfunction of the Laplacian with eigenvalue 4π2∣γ∗∣24\pi^2 \abs{\gamma^*}^2. These functions form an orthogonal basis of L2(TΓ)L^2(T_\Gamma). So the spectrum of TΓT_\Gamma is determined by the numbers NΓ∗(r)=#{γ∗∈Γ∗:∣γ∗∣2=r}N_{\Gamma^*}(r) = \#\set{\gamma^* \in \Gamma^* : \abs{\gamma^*}^2 = r}.

Take n=16n = 16, Γ1=E8⊕E8\Gamma_1 = E_8 \oplus E_8, with E8E_8 the E8 lattice, and Γ2=D16+\Gamma_2 = D_{16}^+. Both are even unimodular lattices, so Γi∗=Γi\Gamma_i^* = \Gamma_i. The theta series ∑γ∈Γiq∣γ∣2/2\sum_{\gamma \in \Gamma_i} q^{\abs{\gamma}^2/2} of an even unimodular lattice of rank 1616 is a modular form of weight 88 for SL2(ℤ)SL_2(\Z) with constant term 11. That space of modular forms has dimension 11, so the two theta series are equal, and NΓ1(r)=NΓ2(r)N_{\Gamma_1}(r) = N_{\Gamma_2}(r) for every rr. Hence TΓ1T_{\Gamma_1} and TΓ2T_{\Gamma_2} are isospectral.

They are not isometric. An isometry of flat tori lifts to an affine isometry of ℝ16\R^{16} whose linear part maps Γ1\Gamma_1 onto Γ2\Gamma_2. But the vectors of squared length 22 generate a sublattice of index 11 in E8⊕E8E_8 \oplus E_8, and a sublattice of index 22 in D16+D_{16}^+, namely D16D_{16}.
