Compactness via open covers
Builds on Compact setOpen coverSubspace topology
Statement
Let be a topological space and let . Then is compact if and only if each family of open subsets of with has a finite subfamily with .
Remarks
Proof: the open sets of the subspace topology on are the sets with open in . So covers of by open sets of and covers by open sets of match each other. For , the statement is the definition of a compact space. Thus compactness of a subset does not depend on the space around it. If , then is compact in if and only if it is compact in .
