Empty set

Builds on Set

Description

The empty set is the set that has no elements. It is written ∅\varnothing or {}\{\}. For each object xx, x∉∅x \notin \varnothing. By the axiom of extensionality, there is only one empty set.

Remarks

The empty set is a subset of every set. This is a case of vacuous truth. Its cardinality is 00. The set {∅}\{\varnothing\} is not empty: it has one element.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
