Definition
Let be a vector space over or . A norm on is a function such that, for all and all scalars : only for , , and . Two norms and on are equivalent when there are real numbers and with
Remarks
Each norm gives a metric . Two norms are equivalent if and only if their metrics are strongly equivalent. For norms, equivalence is the same as giving the same metric topology. On a finite-dimensional space, all norms are equivalent. On , the sup norm and the norm are not equivalent.
