Definition
Let be a Banach manifold of class , with . Let be a topological space and a continuous surjection, and assume each fibre carries the structure of a real Banach space. For Banach spaces and , let be the Banach space of bounded linear maps with the operator norm. The map is a Banach bundle of class if there are data of the following kind. There are an open cover of , Banach spaces and maps such that:
- Each is a homeomorphism with .
- For each , the induced map is a continuous linear isomorphism.
- For all , the map , , is of class .
Remarks
Example: for a Banach manifold and a Banach space , the product with the single trivialisation is a Banach bundle; the transition map is constant. The tangent bundle of a Banach manifold is a Banach bundle of class , with transition maps given by derivatives of chart changes.
Non-example: clause 3 asks for continuity in the operator norm, not only pointwise. On let be the translation by . Then is continuous for each , but for . So gluing two trivial bundles and over by on violates clause 3.
When all are finite-dimensional, this is the notion of a vector bundle of class .
