Complete metric space
Builds on Metric spaceEpsilon characterisation of Cauchy sequencesConvergence of a sequence in a metric space
Definition
A metric space is complete when each Cauchy sequence in converges to a point of .
Remarks
The real line with the usual metric is complete. So is with the Euclidean metric. The rationals and the open interval are not complete. In , the sequence is Cauchy but has no limit in . Completeness depends on the metric, not only on the topology: is homeomorphic to , but only is complete with the usual metric. Each metric space has a completion.
